This is a hand-spun, handwoven kilim runner from the 1960, made by a nomadic tribe in the Adana region of southern Turkey. Throughout the coastal region of Turkey you can come across groups of nomadic herders, the Yoruk, who in the winter come down to the pastures by the coast and in the summer travel up into the high mountain plateaus of Anatolia. Today many Yoruk have settled down to live in rural villages. Only about 200 are still living a nomadic life. They have retained their ancient skill in weaving sheep wool and goat hair into carpets and colorful clothing.
