DOHA - Vintage Askaoun Rug 3'6" x 6'8"
This long-pile, vintage rug, is handwoven by the Amazigh women in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco. Authentic Askaoun rugs are identified by their irregular hand-knotted textures and typically have tassels only on one end. Due to the high lanolin content in the hand-spun sheep wool, they are naturally dirt-resistant and very durable.
The color of this stunning runner is a deep Saffron.
Saffron: The name is derived from Arabic, "zafaran" meaning yellow. It s a spice that comes from the delicate " stigmas" or threads of the purple flower from the Crocus Sativus plant. Each flower has 3 stigmas that have to be laborisly handpicked and dried. It takes about 70,000 crocus flowers to make just 1 pound of saffron....this little rug is very special!
Material: Hand-spun sheep wool
Age: ~90 years
Please note: This is a vintage item and you should expect to see evidence of wear, potentially some reparations and slight ‘imperfections’, which I believe add to the character and charm of the rug.
